Baie du Courrier and Nosy Hara |
| Situated at the northern end of Madagascar, the Baie du Courrier faces Nosy Hara in the Mozambique Channel. This archipelago of limestone islets has recently become a natural reserve known for its rich underwater fauna and flora and for its impressive Tsingys (karstic peaks) which can be found all along the west coast of Madagascar. Soaring over the bay, Windsor Castle peak was used by the French army as a strategic place.
It owes its name to the liberation of the area by the English forces during the Second World War. Its ascent allows discovering a unique 360° panoramic view over the northern end of Madagascar as well as an endemic flora made up of succulent plants (aloes, pachypodium, adenia…).
The name of Baie du Courrier originates in the colonial past: French ships delivered their urgent mail there, to avoid having to navigate around the Amber Cape before reaching Diego Suarez harbour. |
